AAC Assessment Protocol               

1.    Identify client needs and participation patterns

     a.    Needs survey

     b.    Ecological inventory

 

2.    Identify barriers in the environment that limit communication (opportunity barriers). Identify facilitative strategies.

     a.    Policy barriers – there shouldn’t be any

     b.    Attitude barriers

     c.    Knowledge barriers

     d.    Skill barriers

 

3.    Assess client skills including:

     a.    Natural speech potential, use of clarification strategies – motor speech, intelligibility, clarification strategies (which are being used, are they           successful)

     b.    Receptive language – words, sentence complexity, morphemes

     c.    Expressive language – turn taking, initiation/response, communicative functions, modes of communication, context of communication, form of           messages.

     d.    Symbol representation (object, photo, line drawing, text) – unaided/aided, size, field, ability to learn symbols.

     e.    Literacy skills – reading comprehension, spelling, written expression

     f.    Motor skills – Talk to OT/PT. seating, positions during the day, position in the environment (close to peers, access to AAC)

     g.    Sensory perceptual skills – Talk to VI/DHH.

 

4.    Identify potential AAC systems based on needs and skills and evaluate systems in trial use.

 

5.    Evaluate efficacy of interventions
