Reading Tools and Strategies (Tier 3)

The following lists of reading tools and strategies are important to consider when determining what types of assistive technology need to be trialed or implemented to support your struggling student.  The Assistive Technology Specialist will facilitate the trial and implementation of various tools and strategies to assist your student.

  • Use screen readers to facilitate reading of all e-text (e.g. websites, email, documents, presentations, etc.)
  • Incorporate e-books into the student's reading library
  • Utilize text-to-speech software to facilitate e-text reading
  • Create electronic versions of traditional print text using scan-and-read software.  Then use text-to-speech software to read the document aloud.
Comprehension
  • Use the templates available in graphic organizer software to create a outline or mind map of important information
  • Use symbol writing software to create text with pictorial support
  • Utilize text-to-speech software to facilitate e-text reading.
  • Create electronic versions of traditional print text using scan-and-read software.  Then use text-to-speech software to read the document aloud.
