Math Tools and Strategies (Tier 3)

The following lists of math tools and strategies are important to consider when determining what types of assistive technology need to be trialed or implemented to support your struggling student. The Assistive Technology Specialist will facilitate the trial and implementation of various tools and strategies to assist your student.

 Tools
  • Math Voice Recognition software (Math Talk). This may include the added training of voice recognition software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking (Math Talk and DNS programs must be used together)
  • Software for writing equations on a computer (Math Type)
  • App for writing equations electronically on a Tablet device (Panther Math Paper)


 Strategies
  • Use optical character recognition (OCR) software/app to scan math worksheets so answers can be input electronically. If possible, provide training to the user so that he/she can be become independent when using the software/app
  • Provide training to the student (and staff if needed) on how to use the software or apps to input math computations electronically versus with pen/pencil which may include training the student on how to transfer computations from device to computer or via email so that it can be printed or sent to the teacher or computer
